Welcome to our Artist of the Month feature for September, and congratulations to Maureen Greenwood for being our selected artist.

Hi Maureen - can you tell us a little about yourself, and how you got started as an artist?
I have always loved to paint. However, due to circumstances, I was unable to take up art seriously until later in life, at which time I attended various art classes and eventually joined local art societies where I exhibited my work. Having studied for over 6 years I set up classes, from home, teaching art. In 2001, I was approached by a Gallery Owner who mentored me into the commercial world of art, which led into me working as a full-time artist.

What are you favourite subjects to paint?
I suppose my favourite subjects are scenes of places which I have visited, although I enjoy the challenge of painting a variety of subjects, including abstract art. My trips to Europe inspire me and give me ideas for new work.

Do you have any advice for aspiring artists, or for those new to art?
From my experience over many years, as an artist and tutor, I would advise any aspiring artists or those new to art, to get a good grounding in the fundamentals of art. In particular, learn how to draw before plunging into paint. Many people new to art are in such a hurry to see results that they are disappointed in the outcome of their efforts and I would say “Don’t run before you can walk” and be patient.

What do you hope people see in your art?
There are no hidden messages in my art and all I hope for is that people will derive enjoyment from viewing my work.
Who are your favourite artists, and are there any works in particular which have inspired you?
My favourite artists are Vermeer, Chardin, Sisley and contemporary artists such as Edward Seago for his fluency with colour and impressionistic approach also Samuel J Peploe for his colour and design.. There are too many works to mention which have inspired me.

What painting or work of art do you wish you had produced?
There is no single work that immediately comes to mind as I admire so many paintings. |
Apart from your portfolio at artfair365.co.uk, how do you promote your work - are you a member of any societies, and do you have any exhibitions planned?
My work is promoted through an art gallery in the south of England. I am also represented at various art fairs by another gallery. I was a member of 3 local art societies for approximately 18 years, but because I teach and paint I do not now have the time to attend meetings. No, I have no exhibitions planned.
