Welcome to our Artist of the Month feature for November, and congratulations to Sally Bassett for being our selected artist.
Hi Sally - can you tell us a little about yourself, and how you got started as an artist?
I was educated at Kings Langley Rudolf Steiner School. At school I found
painting and drawing easy and thought it was something everybody could do. I
took 'A' level art, but then did not do much drawing or painting for a
number of years while I pursued my career as a teacher.
A new way of life has emerged since I completed an honours degree in Fine
Art at the University of Herfordshire in 1994. If I have any talent it is as
an artist!

What are you favourite subjects to paint?
I always carry a camera and small sketch book in my bag (it has to be a
large bag!)I sketch and make notes. The sea, fishing boats, the weather and
clouds, and flowers are what repeatedly inspires me.
The coast of Cornwall provides an on-going source of interest and renewal.
Maybe my repeated trips to the county have something to do with my roots, my
great grandfather being a Cornish tin engineer.

Do you have any advice for aspiring artists, or for those new to art?
There are several ways that aspiring artists might begin.Charcoal and large sheets of inexpensive paper would be a good
beginning.Experimenting with mark making and tonal values maybe by copying
one of the works by Turner and giving yourself a short time limit of no more
than 10 minutes for each piece.
Copying favourite works of art can help getting to know an artist, give
confidence and bring pleasing results. You may also have a masterpiece at an
affordable price.
What do you hope people see in your work?
I hope people like my art work because it is lively and colourful. I get
excited by what I see and the paint and draw. If I have captured the
essence of what I have seen and been able to communicate this to the viewer
of my work I am content.
Who are your favourite artists or photographers, and are there any works in particular which have inspired you?
I have been inspired by many artists. The first artist that I became aware
of was van Gogh.
I love the works of Rembrandt, particularly his painting, 'The Adoration of
the Shepherds' in the National Gallery. I also greatly admire his pen
drawings and etchings. Also on my list would be Chardin and Vermeer.
Then there are the wonderful atmospheric wild seascapes painted by
the German Expressionist Emil Nolde, and the late seascapes of Turner. Every
time I am in the Tate Britain I go on a 'pilgrimage' to visit the late
seascapes of Turner.
Living painters I admire are Len Tabner and Kurt Jackson.

What painting, photograph or work of art do you wish you had produced?
I would have liked to have been able to paint 'Snowstorm,
Steamboat off a Harbour Mouth' or 'The Shipwreck' by Turner.
Apart from your portfolio at artfair365.co.uk, how do you promote your work - are you a member of any societies, and do you have any exhibitions planned?
My work is promoted by coastal galleries in Dorset, Cornwall, Suffolk and
Norfolk. Interested clients visit my web site sallybassett.co.uk.
I am happy to receive visitors to my studio by prior arrangement without
obligation to buy.
From your own portfolio, which are your favourite 3 artworks?
My three favourite works from my portfolio are
Waiting for the Tide, St Ives, Cornish Lass, and
Roaring Waves on a Pink and Blue Storm Morning.
