Welcome to our Artist of the Month feature for June, and congratulations to Anthony Caruana for being our selected artist.
Hi Anthony - can you tell us a little about yourself, and how you got started as an artist?
My beginning as an artist was very humble since the small island of Gozo
where I live offers no opportunities, and the artistic education was very
basic. I showed an early inclination to painting and drawing, and luckily my art teacher at the Secondary school introduced me to a small
group of volunteers, artists and craftsmen who were sent to Gozo by the
British Council. They encouraged me a great deal.
Later on I was
given a scholarship by the Italian Government to attend the Accademia di
Belle Arti 'Pietro Vannucci' in Perugia where I studied fine arts and
etchings.
I also attended the Malta National School of Fine Arts and
studied Commercial Art with ICS of London and Interior Design with
Rhodec International of Brighton.
What are you favourite subjects to paint?
The Maltese islands are in the middle of the Mediterranean where the
sun shines most of the year, the air is very clear, and therefore the
colours are very bright and warm. The vivacity of colours are my
favourite way of expressing myself, whether in a landscape or an abstract.
Do you have any advice for aspiring artists, or for those new to art?
There are no secrets! One has to practice continuously and learn how to
observe. The road is long and hard - perseverance is the key, and to try to be
stronger after each and any setback.
What do you hope people see in your art?
In my works I always try to portray my feelings and I hope the viewers
appreciate the beautiful things in life.
Who are your favourite artists, and are there any works in particular which have inspired you?
There are many, from different periods, and all masters.
In spite of this I would say Franz Mark's 'Abstract form' in Osthaus Museum in
Hgen, and Stefano Piali 'Apparizione' in Rome (private collection), and Ernest
Wilhelm Nay 'Two heads' (private collection) are all works which
stimulate my inspiration for bright colours.
What famous painting or work of art do you wish you had produced?
The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome.
Apart from your portfolio at artfair365.co.uk, how do you promote your work - are you a member of any societies, and do you have any exhibitions planned?
There are other sites where my work is being promoted, but also I am
regularly featured in local magazines and newspapers. I exhibit my
paintings at my gallery Living Art and currently an exhibition of my
latest works is at the Art Academy on the main island of Malta.
From your own portfolio, which are your favourite 3 artworks?
It is not easy to select any. They are all my creations and I always
feel a sense of joy whenever I finish a new painting. They are the
oxygen of my life.
